Phono Pre Amps

Do I need a phono preamp for my record player?

Short answer: Yes, but you might already have one without knowing it.

Long answer: Turntables produce a very low-level signal which must be amplified before it can be fed into the regular 'line-level' inputs on amplifiers/receivers. This is the job of a phono pre-amplifier. Some turntables have a phono pre-amp built-in; these turntables will usually have a 'phono / line-level' switch on the back. Some amplifiers/receivers have a pre-amp built-in; these will have an input labelled 'Phono'. If neither your turntable nor your amplifier/receiver has this feature, then you will need a standalone phono pre-amp like the ones below.
