Why do I need a preamp?
A phono pre-amplifier is designed to boost the signal from a turntable or record player before the signal is passed to your Hi-Fi amplifier or receiver. Typically the signal output from a turntable or record player is quite weak, and it's required to be boosted before it hits the main amplifier of your stereo or hi-fi unit.
Some turntables and amplifiers have a phono preamp built into them, but more often than not, a dedicated preamp is required to bring the low-level signal to a level that an amplifier can work with.
Many music lovers prefer to use a dedicated phono preamp in place of the small one built into their equipment as it results in a better sound.
Not to be missed, in the signal path and visible through the port on the front a 12AU7 tube can be seen working away. It acts as a double triode, which to valve-enthusiasts means it plays a decisive role in the rich sound that is output. Tube amplification results in a characteristically "warm" sound that audio enthusiasts lust over. Upgrade your phono music setup with this high-end tube preamp, and hear why vinyl lovers around the world are turning to hybrid tube preamps!
Designed with performance and aesthetic in mind, the PHO-701, as with all of Vincent's tubeLine range, features a round window on the front panel where you can see the vacuum tube in action. Switch the lamp on to make the tube glow with a warm light, giving your system an elegant appearance that is sure to impress before you even play anything through it.
In addition to vacuum tube processing, the PHO-701 reaps the benefits of the power output and control that comes from solid state circuitry. This is a hybrid tube/transistor phono amplifier that is guaranteed to offer a level of sound quality and reliability you've never gotten from your vinyl system before
Vinyl in the Digital Age
Many releases in vinyl are already delivered with download codes, which allows the music lover to store their newly acquired record digitally and to use the music digitally. But what about your old treasures? Thanks to the USB port on the PHO-701, every record player can now also be connected to a computer via the preamp to digitize vinyl records. While playing a record, you can record it to a digital format using software on a computer. This feature is commonly only seen on select modern turntables.
As with the predecessor, the power supply is housed in an external unit. Like the main unit, the power supply is specially designed to avoid hum interference and unwanted noise. The isolated power supply supplies the phono unit with "clean current". The selective choice of the other components in this unit result in a signal with very low noise.
The PHO-701 is designed to suit almost every commercially available pick-up system. The switch on the back selects either Moving Magnet (MM) and Moving Coil (MC) mode, to suit the cartridge of your turntable.
By means of DIP switches on the bottom of the device, it is now possible to make precise adjustments to the impedance and capacity. A seemingly small feature, but clearly noticeable in the sound and identifiable to the sharp-eared music lover.
