What is a Media Streamer?

The term “Media Streamer” has started to crop up a lot recently and essentially this is a term used to describe a Digital Media Receiver (DMR). Media streamer is a very broad term which covers a few different network devices that are designed to either record or download and deliver programs. In general terms a media streamer can be classified as either a device that downloads and stores media, or a device that streams media from a source that is external to it. Media streamers can be capable of different functions, such as music, music and pictures or music, pictures and video.

Some allow you to watch pause and record live television, if they incorporate a digital TV tuner. Some let you store and play your CD’s or DVD’s, listen and pause digital radio, and view your digital photographs individually or like a slideshow. This depends on the individual features of the unit.

As with lots of new technology, when more manufacturers begin to release the technology, the more affordable they become. Media streamers can be bought individually through your technology retailer or even bundled up with other products such as broadband and telephone line rental by service providers. Some are even integrated into games consoles. Each have their own benefits depending on your reason for using them. Consider what your viewing and listening habits are before diving headfirst into the first unit you come across. Ask lots of questions, and remember that when it comes to devices that require external download, there may also be other costs involved such as subscription fees.
