It’s been quite the buzz in the industry recently. Onkyo and Dolby have collaborated to bring Atmos® to a range of Onkyo AV Receivers. Sounds move in every direction throughout the room, with an incredible level of realism, and Dolby through Onkyo are bringing this new audio experience to your home.
Dolby Atmos®, Home Cinema is extremely powerful, combining traditional home theatre speaker layouts with either in-ceiling or new Dolby Atmos® enabled speakers which create a plane of sound above the listener. You are encompassed by ultra-realistic sound because you are placed in the centre of the experience.
A typical surround sound speaker set up will consist of two fronts, two rears, a centre and a subwoofer for a 5.1 set up. This can be extended with two side speakers, for a 7.1 set up.
When we start incorporating Atmos®, two overhead speakers are adopted for a set up that may be expressed like this: 5.1.2, or four overhead for this: 5.1.4. (pictured below)

With Dolby Atmos®, sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead. The format combines a channel-based audio bed with object-oriented sound to place and move specific effects around the theatre, creating a breathtakingly realistic and captivating sonic atmosphere.
Sound designers and artists are free to mix in a 3D space, steering effects through surround channels and adding a seamless overhead dimension with discrete height channels. In commercial theatres, it supports up to 128 audio tracks and 64 unique speaker feeds. The home theatre adaptation automatically scales to your surround configuration. Onkyo receivers support any layout up to 11 channels.
