With normal closed back headphones, the sound can get muddled by being trapped inside the ear cup, but with open backed headphones some of the sound is allowed to fliter out of the ear cups providing a more natural sound closer to listening with speakers. They also help with the usual fatigue that often results from using closed back headphones for long periods of time.
